A charming and highly decorative West Coast scene by Eric Lundgren painted in the artist’s characteristic mid-century style. Lundgren studied at Valand in Gothenburg and is best known for harbor scenes, coastal views, and maritime subjects from Gothenburg, Marstrand, and the Bohuslän archipelago.
The motif depicts a quiet fishing harbor with boathouses perched at the water’s edge, a small rowboat resting in the foreground, and a fishing vessel moored between the buildings. The soft palette of pearl-grey, pale blue, and muted red creates the atmospheric light so typical of Sweden’s western coastline. Reflections shimmer across the calm water, while the loose, confident brushwork lends the scene a sense of movement and freshness.
Rather than focusing on topographical accuracy, Lundgren captures the mood of a Bohuslän fishing community, weathered boathouses, sheltered inlets, and the enduring relationship between sea and shore. The composition balances rustic architecture with maritime life, resulting in a work that feels both nostalgic and timeless.
Painted during the 1950s, this oil on canvas is a fine example of the accessible and decorative Scandinavian coastal paintings that became popular in Swedish homes during the post-war years. The original gilded frame further enhances the period character and presentation.
