Oil painting on board, signed and dated 1933 to one side. The front presents a quietly atmospheric Swedish landscape, rendered in Wesström’s characteristic loose and sensitive manner. On the reverse is a charming and intimate portrait of a woman in a red garment, apparently by the same hand.
A particularly intriguing double-sided work, inviting the question: who was she? A friend, a model , or perhaps the artist’s secret romance? The two paintings together give the work an unusually personal and almost private character.
Gösta Wesström was primarily known as a landscape and portrait painter, and spent much of his life working in the Kisa area in Sweden.
Unframed. Surface staining, marks and edge wear, but with an abundance of charm and character. A wonderfully informal and intimate piece of Swedish 1930s art, two paintings, one board, and perhaps a story that was never meant to be told.
Good vintage condition, with stains, edge wear, marks.
Unframed. Size: 43 x 34cm / 16.9 x 13.4in
Technique: Oil on board
Artist: GÖSTA WESSTRÖM (1888-1981) Swedish.
