A striking Scandinavian landscape by Swedish painter Birger Welander, executed in the early 1960s. The panoramic composition presents a dramatic northern terrain where sweeping mountains rise behind a rugged foreground of windswept trees and glowing autumnal fields. The artist employs a bold palette of deep blues, ochres and crimson reds, creating a vivid contrast between the dark mountain mass and the luminous sky.

Painted with thick, expressive impasto, the surface reveals energetic palette-knife work that gives the landscape a powerful tactile presence. The stylised forms and broad colour planes reflect the direction Welander’s work took during the 1950s and early 1960s, when his landscapes became increasingly decorative and structurally simplified.

Birger Welander studied at Isaac Grünewald’s painting school in Stockholm and undertook study trips to France, Spain and Italy. From the late 1940s onward he exhibited widely across Sweden, establishing himself as a distinctive voice within mid-century Scandinavian landscape painting.

On the reverse is an interesting period label containing a printed biography of the artist together with excerpts from critical reviews dating from 1946–1959, offering contemporary insight into Welander’s artistic reception and exhibition history.

With its sweeping panoramic format, vibrant coloristic energy and richly textured surface, the present work captures the raw beauty of the Nordic landscape in a distinctly modern Scandinavian idiom.
