A luminous mid-century landscape by Swedish painter Evert Grynning, depicting a quiet courtyard scene inspired by one of the artist’s travels in southern Europe. The motif, with its sun-bleached plaster walls, climbing greenery and narrow exterior stairway, evokes the intimate architecture of northern Italy or the Mediterranean hill towns visited by many Scandinavian artists during study journeys in the mid-20th century.

The composition balances rustic architecture with soft vegetation and dappled sunlight. Grynning’s brushwork is confident and expressive, using warm earth tones, cool shadows and lively greens to create a sense of warmth and stillness. The slightly impressionistic handling of light and surface lends the scene a poetic atmosphere, capturing a fleeting moment of quiet southern afternoon.

Karl Evert “Evert” Grynning was active as a Swedish landscape painter during the mid-1900s and is known for evocative rural motifs rendered with painterly sensitivity and atmospheric color.

A charming and decorative example of Scandinavian mid-century plein-air painting, combining Nordic painterly tradition with southern European inspiration.
