A large and emotionally evocative oil on canvas by Swedish artist Elsa Viola Stolpe-Hansson, painted after 1938 (when she married Helge Hansson) and titled Problem. The composition depicts a young figure, believed possibly to be the artist’s son Roger, born in 1944, seated in quiet introspection while surrounded by a shifting world of fragmented forms and dreamlike imagery.
Executed in an expressive modernist manner, the painting blends abstraction and figuration into a deeply psychological composition. Soft blues, smoky greys and muted earth tones dissolve into visions of water, faces, architecture and shadowy silhouettes, creating an atmosphere that feels both intimate and subconscious.
If the child is indeed Roger, the work gains a profoundly personal dimension. Rather than merely illustrating a “problem,” the painting becomes a reflection on motherhood, vulnerability and the uncertainty of the postwar era, a portrait not simply of a child, but of emotional inheritance and human fragility. The bowed posture of the figure conveys contemplation, worry or withdrawal, while the surrounding imagery appears like thoughts and memories unfolding around him.
Large in scale and rich in atmosphere, Problem stands as a compelling example of Scandinavian mid-century expressionism, balancing poetic sensitivity with emotional depth
