This vintage wall plaque is a striking example of the work of Lisa Larson, one of Sweden’s most beloved ceramic artists. Crafted in glazed stoneware, the piece features a highly stylized bird motif, rendered in a sculptural relief technique. Larson’s signature aesthetica blend of mid-century modern and Scandinavian folk art, is evident in the simplified, almost abstract form of the bird, which balances playfulness with elegant design.
The glaze is vivid and textural, with contrasting areas of deep red, black, and ivory-white. These high-contrast colors give the piece dramatic visual weight while emphasizing the bird’s wings, beak, and plumage. The raised relief sections are carefully outlined, allowing the colors to pool and deepen in recesses, creating a tactile and dimensional surface.
Encircled by a thick red border, the round plaque is both decorative and expressive. While some of Lisa Larson’s works were produced under Gustavsberg Studio, many of her ceramic birds are now prized as collectible art objects due to their unique charm, craftsmanship, and modernist appeal.
