Painted in 1966, this expressive Danish landscape by Simon Kramer centers on a group of slender trees rising from an autumnal terrain. The dominant, leaning trunk, dark and scarred against a glowing field of gold and ochre, becomes a quiet symbol of endurance. Despite its angle and apparent vulnerability, it remains firmly rooted.
Kramer’s vigorous brushwork and textured surface give the scene a tactile presence, while the warm, fading light suggests late autumn, both a time of decline and of quiet strength. The composition balances movement and stillness, with the diagonal thrust of the tree contrasting the calm, reflective water below.
A compelling example of Danish mid-century landscape painting, I Am Still Standing speaks not only of nature, but of resilience, persistence, and the quiet dignity of survival.
