A striking modernist oil painting by renowned Swedish artist Esaias Thorén, a leading figure in Swedish Cubism and abstraction. This large-format work exemplifies Thorén’s mastery of geometric abstraction, with layered forms, rhythmic lines, and a moody palette of black, muted rose, blue, and cream tones. The composition is bold yet harmonious, reflecting Thorén’s deep engagement with European avant-garde movements of the mid-20th century.

Esaias Thorén was a prominent Swedish modernist painter and a key member of the influential Halmstad Group (Halmstadgruppen), a collective that played a central role in bringing Cubism, Surrealism, and abstract art to Sweden in the early 20th century. Born in Halmstad, Thorén trained at various art schools in Sweden and traveled widely in Europe, where he absorbed the avant-garde currents of the time—particularly the works of Picasso, Léger, and the Bauhaus movement.

Thorén’s early work was grounded in Cubism and later evolved toward more abstract and constructivist styles. His compositions often explore the relationship between color, form, and rhythm, creating visually balanced yet intellectually engaging pieces. He worked across painting, printmaking, and public murals.

As part of the Halmstad Group, Thorén was instrumental in modernizing Swedish art, helping shift it from traditional naturalism to a more expressive and experimental language. His works are held in several major Scandinavian museum collections, including the Moderna Museet in Stockholm and Malmö Art Museum, and continue to attract collectors of Scandinavian modernism.
