A charming coastal composition by Swedish artist Per-Olof Eklund (1941–2019), depicting a picturesque settlement along the rugged shoreline of Bohuslän on Sweden’s west coast. Painted in oil on canvas, the work captures the characteristic clustered houses perched upon smooth granite rocks overlooking calm water.
Eklund renders the scene with a soft, slightly naïve modernist touch. The houses—painted in muted reds, yellows, whites and pale blues—gather organically across the rocky hillside, their simple geometric forms creating a harmonious rhythm. The pale Nordic sky and quiet water below provide a gentle contrast to the lively architecture above, evoking the tranquil atmosphere of a small Bohuslän fishing community.
Rather than focusing on strict detail, the artist emphasizes mood and structure, allowing colour fields and simplified forms to convey the essence of the west coast landscape. The result is a poetic and atmospheric interpretation of one of Sweden’s most beloved coastal regions.
