Painted in the first year of the German occupation of Norway, this evocative cityscape captures the historic timber warehouses lining the Nidelva River in Trondheim. For centuries these waterfront buildings served as the commercial heart of the city, storing goods arriving from across the North Atlantic. Even today, they remain among Trondheim’s most recognizable landmarks and a lasting symbol of its maritime heritage.  

The artist presents the familiar scene with quiet restraint. Soft, muted earth tones and a luminous Nordic sky create an atmosphere that feels both timeless and reflective. At first glance, it is simply a peaceful harbor view, yet the date—1940—adds a powerful historical dimension.
